Erg Chebbi Dunes, Morocco

The Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga are indisputably one of the greatest sights of Morocco. These giant hills of smooth sand line the Algarian border and are a must see for everyone, who visits this North African country. Morrocan legend says that the Erg Chebbi sand dunes were send by God as a punishment for turning away a fatigued traveler from Morroco's Sahara desert.

In 2009 during a roadtrip through beautiful Morocco Max and I visited the Erg Chebbi Dunes.

Luckily, we weren't fatigued ;-), when we came in february. If you want to experience the scenery in its essential state, you should aim to come here out of the main tourist season.

The dunes of Erg Chebbi reach a height of up to 150 metres and altogether spans an area of 50 kilometres from north to south and up to 5-10 kilometres from east to west.

During the warmest part of the year, Moroccans come to Erg Chebbi to be buried neck-deep in the hot sand for a few minutes at a time. This is considered to be a treatment for rheumatism.

Max and I didn't do any burying, but we made a daytrip through the desert, where we used a camel as means of transportation. We were with a guide, but next to him we didn't encounter any human being in the surroundings of the desert. When you walk for a few kilometres you're unable to see the village of Merzouga and you feel yourself emerged in warm, lonely and awesome desertlife.

For me being in the desert gives you a sense of silence and time for reflecting on what's important in life. It feels for a second like you're alone in this beautiful world of sand and camels.

Hopefully, you'll enjoy the pictures from our throw-back-Morroco-trip.
